Faith Comes

In our previous study, Born of the Word, we learnt that we have been born again of the Word, and we need the word-food to sustain the God-kind of life. Now we are going to continue with our study and see why it is so important that we keep hearing the Word.

Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.

2 Corinthians 5:9 (NKJV)

Since we shall appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ to give an account for all the things done while in the flesh, we make it our aim to be well pleasing to Him at all times. In Ephesians 5:8-10, the Bible tells us that we are light in the Lord, though we were once darkness. Thank God we not only have the light, we are light in the Lord. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 that we are the light of the world. The Apostle Paul here also calls us the children of light. Remember in our previous study we learnt that we have been born again of the Word of God. Now John 1:1 says that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Verse 4 says that in Him, the Word, was life, and this life was the light of men; and verse 14 says that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. When the Word became flesh He became Jesus.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

John 8:12 (NKJV)

This same Word, who became Jesus said that He is the light of the world and anyone who follows Him shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life. In John 12:36, the Lord Jesus told us to believe in the light and become sons of light. Anything that gives birth only gives birth to its kind. Men give birth to men, cows to cows, goats to goats and so on and so forth. Now since the Word that gave birth to us is the Light, we too are lights. Having believed in the Lord Jesus we have become the children of God or the sons of God. James 1:17 calls God the Father of lights, and if He is our Father then we are the lights. The sons of the Light are lights, and the sons of God are gods. So now we have the divine nature in us. The life of God in us gives us this nature. (2 Peter 1:4) We are not ordinary, we are God's own special people called out of darkness into His marvelous light and through us He diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

Now since we are the children of light we are exhorted to find out what is acceptable or pleasing to the Lord. Ephesians 5:17 tells us not to be unwise but to understand what the will of the Lord is. It is ours to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. You cannot please one whose will you don't understand. You have to know what makes one pleased if you are going to be well pleasing to them. In the absence of the knowledge of the will of God you cannot please Him. The Apostle Paul prayed for the church in Colosse that they would be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding that they would walk worthy of Him, fully pleasing Him and being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. The fragrance of the knowledge of God can only be felt as we demonstrate our knowledge of Him to others. Your influence on others should make them know and desire to have your God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

We started by saying that we are the children of light, and that we are to find out how we may be well pleasing to Him. According to the scripture we have just read, faith is a requirement if at all we are going to please God. The Bible says that without faith it is not possible at all to please God. Then faith must be such an important thing in our lives. Hebrews 10:38 tells us that the just shall live by faith, and if he draws back then the Lord is not pleased with him. If we are going to please God everyday then we must live by faith everyday. Faith is not something we use when we want to get God to do something, it's the way we are expected to live everyday.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Faith comes. You cannot have faith in something you don't know. Now we have seen that without faith it is impossible to please God, and that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Faith in God comes by hearing about and from God. You cannot believe in Him unless you have heard from Him or about Him. If you have not heard then you also don't know His will and if you don't know His will then you cannot please Him. Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God. Every word of God brings forth faith in God and in the presence of faith God is well pleased.
